Which of the three modes?
Forum/platform caps the width → "By width" (e.g. 1080); need a fixed height (e.g. a cover) → "By height"; just want everything half size → "By percent". All three lock the aspect ratio.
Quality when shrinking
Shrinking uses high-quality resampling — still crisp at 50%. Output keeps the original format by default: jpg stays jpg, png stays png, no extra format loss; or switch to webp / avif / bmp / ico before exporting.
